This was a large pro\u00adject that meas\u00adured what skills the most effect\u00adive man\u00adagers at Google use, and the pit\u00adfalls poor man\u00adagers fall into. As one might expect from Google, the res\u00adults are but\u00adtressed by a ser\u00adi\u00adous amount of data: over 10,000 answers about 100 vari\u00adables. If you work for any\u00adone, or man\u00adage any\u00adone, it\u2019s worth read\u00ading about, even if what you do isn\u2019t in software.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What I found inter\u00adest\u00ading was this quote, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/13\/business\/13hire.html\">https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/13\/business\/13hire.html<\/a>:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>In the Google con\u00adtext, we\u2019d always believed that to be a man\u00adager, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly on the engin\u00adeer\u00ading side, you need to be as deep or deep\u00ader a tech\u00adnic\u00adal expert than the people who work for you,\u201d Mr. Bock says. \u201cIt turns out that that\u2019s abso\u00adlutely the least import\u00adant thing. It\u2019s import\u00adant, but pales in com\u00adpar\u00adis\u00adon. Much more import\u00adant is just mak\u00ading that con\u00adnec\u00adtion and being accessible.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s been recog\u00adnised for some time in oth\u00ader busi\u00adnesses that the skills required to be a good man\u00adager are not neces\u00adsar\u00adily the same as those needed to do good tech\u00adnic\u00adal work.
