He picked the pat\u00adtern, and the yarn, pick\u00ading some\u00adthing (of course) in a fine yarn that took seem\u00adingly forever to fin\u00adish. How\u00adever, fin\u00adish it I did, eventually.<\/p>\n<p>The pat\u00adtern is Alice Star\u00admore\u2019s <em>Fife<\/em>, from the <cite>Fish\u00ader\u00admen\u2019s Sweat\u00aders<\/cite> book. It comes in one size only, for an eight-year-old, so it\u2019s a little big on him right now, but won\u2019t be by next winter. There\u2019s a pic\u00adture at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.virtualyarns.com\/scripts\/showitem.asp?ID=128\">vir\u00adtu\u00adal yarns<\/a> web site, which is a show case for the Star\u00admore designs (and sells kits and yarn). I knit\u00adted my ver\u00adsion in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleckheaton.biz\/colour_range.asp?yarnid=18\">Cleck\u00adheaton Machine Wash 5\u2011ply Crepe<\/a>, which I got in Aus\u00adtralia last time we were there. They don\u2019t seem to have the same col\u00adour any more for that yarn, it\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleckheaton.biz\/colour_range.asp?yarnid=13\">col\u00adour 2181 (pic\u00adtured in a dif\u00adfer\u00adent yarn)<\/a>. For once in my life I got per\u00adfect gauge on the recom\u00admen\u00added needles! Both stitch and row gauges matched, which made knit\u00adting a lot easi\u00ader \u2014 no cal\u00adcu\u00adlat\u00ading changes in increases and decreases to match a dif\u00adfer\u00ading row&nbsp;gauge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So here\u2019s the sweat\u00ader, nicely laid out on my new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.camillavalleyfarm.com\/knit\/woolyboard.htm\">wooly board<\/a> (great for dry\u00ading knit\u00adted sweat\u00aders), pho\u00adto\u00adgraphed on a nice spring day in our back&nbsp;yard.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laurenwood.org\/images\/fife.jpg\"><img class=\"center\" src=\"http:\/\/www.laurenwood.org\/images\/thumb-fife.jpg\" alt=\"Fife sweater\"> <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some time ago I prom\u00adised our son that I would knit him a sweat\u00ader.
