In the interests of mak\u00ading it easi\u00ader for myself in the future and hope\u00adfully oth\u00aders, here are a couple of things I fixed this&nbsp;week.<\/p>\n<p>For some reas\u00adon the print\u00ader, an old but still very pro\u00adduct\u00adive <span class=\"caps\">HP<\/span> Col\u00ador Laser\u00adjet 4550 that cost a hor\u00adrendous amount when we first bought it back in 1998 or there\u00adabouts, star\u00adted hav\u00ading con\u00adnip\u00adtions when we wanted to print out files. Mostly it blew up on Open\u00adOf\u00adfice or Microsoft Word doc\u00adu\u00adments. The error was 49.<span class=\"caps\">4C04<\/span> Ser\u00advice Error. Pok\u00ading around on the web revealed a bunch of com\u00adpletely use\u00adless information:<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dt>Turn the com\u00adputer off, wait a minute, turn it back on, this only ever hap\u00adpens once and reboot\u00ading the print\u00ader solves the problem<\/dt>\n<dd>Wrong! The next thing I prin\u00adted caused one line of wing\u00addings to be prin\u00adted per page for many pages des\u00adpite press\u00ading the can\u00adcel but\u00adton; turn\u00ading the power off res\u00adul\u00adted only in paper jams and the same error message.<\/dd>\n<dt>Caused by a defect\u00adive net\u00adwork card; replace<\/dt>\n<dd>Not in this case; it\u2019s a par\u00adal\u00adlel (<span class=\"caps\">LPT1<\/span>) con\u00adnec\u00adtion dir\u00adectly into the net\u00adworked <span class=\"caps\">PC<\/span><\/dd>\n<dt>Caused by third-party memory; take it&nbsp;out<\/dt>\n<dd>Again, not in this case since I nev\u00ader bothered installing more memory<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>What did work was rein\u00adstalling the drivers. Not the <span class=\"caps\">PCL<\/span> 6 drivers that Win\u00addows tried to tell me to take, the <span class=\"caps\">PCL<\/span> 5 drivers. Those <span class=\"caps\">PCL<\/span> 5 drivers actu\u00adally work on our sys\u00adtem, unlike the <span class=\"caps\">PCL<\/span> 6 drivers.<\/p>\n<p>The oth\u00ader prob\u00adlem that I found the solu\u00adtion to was the size of the Norton Pro\u00adtec\u00adted Recycle Bin. I installed this some years ago, have nev\u00ader used it, and found that it kept grow\u00ading. And grow\u00ading. And would\u00adn\u2019t let itself be cleaned up, no mat\u00adter how often I told it to purge itself. So I unin\u00adstalled and then tried to delete the recycler\/nprotect dir\u00adect\u00adory files. No dice. The Norton web\u00adsite sug\u00adges\u00adtion did\u00adn\u2019t work either (sounds weird, but it\u2019s true); what did work was the sug\u00adges\u00adtion I found online: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computing.net\/windowsxp\/wwwboard\/forum\/94102.html\">rmdir \/s \\\\?\\C:\\<span class=\"caps\">RECYCLER<\/span>\\<span class=\"caps\">NPROTECT<\/span><\/a>.
