I see Dave Shea has been explain\u00ading<\/a> why he does\u00adn\u2019t typ\u00adic\u00adally order goods online; I\u2019ve ordered lots of goods online and had mixed exper\u00adi\u00adences. I usu\u00adally only buy online if 1) I can\u00ad\u2019t find what I\u2019m look\u00ading for loc\u00adally, or 2) it\u2019s sub\u00adstan\u00adtially cheap\u00ader than buy\u00ading loc\u00adally. I also make sure of war\u00adranty implic\u00ada\u00adtions for any\u00adthing I buy that might need one (e.g., my Tung\u00adsten<\/a>).<\/p>\n

I tend to give the nod to Cana\u00addian retail\u00aders because of the hassles Dave talks about and also because I like to sup\u00adport loc\u00adal or semi-loc\u00adal small busi\u00adnesses (although I have bought enough at Amazon that the reg\u00adu\u00adlar \u201cyou might be inter\u00adested in\u201d emails give a remark\u00adably con\u00adson\u00adant view into my cur\u00adrent interests). I buy books at Amazon.com if I\u2019m not in a hurry to get them and if they\u2019re cheap\u00ader, includ\u00ading ship\u00adping, than buy\u00ading the same books loc\u00adally. This is often the case right now since books have the price prin\u00adted on the back, and the Cana\u00addian dol\u00adlar is cur\u00adrently worth quite a lot more com\u00adpared to the US<\/span> dol\u00adlar than when lots of the books were printed. <\/p>\n

Although I haven\u2019t had any\u00adthing shipped by them for some time, I agree with Derek Miller<\/a>, who advises avoid\u00ading UPS<\/span> if at all pos\u00adsible; I\u2019ve found UPS<\/span> in the past to be very quick to charge double fees if two boxes in the same ship\u00adment are labelled with the total (they charge as if each box had the total value). What I do to try to get around that prob\u00adlem is to either call or email the place I\u2019m order\u00ading from if I think there\u2019s a chance they might put things into more than one box, and dis\u00adcuss the issue with them. The res\u00adult is that I haven\u2019t had that par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar prob\u00adlem for a few years now. Com\u00adpan\u00adies that don\u2019t answer the phone or email don\u2019t get my custom.<\/p>\n
