The scenes of pan\u00adic repor\u00adted on in the paper on Sat\u00adurday are, it is to be hoped, a thing of the past as people real\u00adise that boil\u00ading water isn\u2019t all that hard, and then fil\u00adter\u00ading it after\u00adwards does get rid of most of the silt. I was amused at the note sent home from my son\u2019s school which poin\u00adted out \u201cdetailed inform\u00ada\u00adtion on how to boil water has been pub\u00adlished in all major news\u00adpa\u00adpers and is avail\u00adable on line\u201d \u2014 do they not teach you how to boil water in school these days? If any\u00adone needs the info, here\u2019s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikihow.com\/Boil-Water\">Wiki\u00adHow page<\/a> \u2014 just remem\u00adber you have to boil it for at least a minute to kill any bac\u00adteria. Mind you, read\u00ading the cur\u00adrent advis\u00adory  makes it clear that there isn\u2019t actu\u00adally any proven prob\u00adlem with the water here oth\u00ader than the look and taste of it, the author\u00adit\u00adies are just being care\u00adful (and no doubt mind\u00adful of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/background\/walkerton\/\">Walker\u00adton<\/a> dis\u00adaster, although they dis\u00adpute any connection).<\/p>\n<p>The biggest con\u00adsequence for most of Van\u00adcouver was that vari\u00adous cof\u00adfee joints were shut (those that could\u00adn\u2019t guar\u00adan\u00adtee boil\u00ading the water for long enough), as was our loc\u00adal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tbray.org\/ongoing\/When\/200x\/2006\/03\/30\/Teacup\">tea shop<\/a>. I found the lat\u00adter par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly iron\u00adic giv\u00aden the likely role that tea, and the neces\u00adsity of boil\u00ading water for it, played in cut\u00adting down infant mor\u00adtal\u00adity in the 1700s in Bri\u00adtain \u2014 a sum\u00admary is in this art\u00adicle: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aim-digest.com\/gateway\/pages\/book\/articles\/tea.htm\">Did tea and beer make Bri\u00adtain great?<\/a>.
