And it\u2019s weird no mat\u00adter wheth\u00ader the copy\u00adright is there to give oth\u00ader people rights to use, copy and modi\u00adfy the work, or rights to the author to pro\u00adtect and profit from their work. In oth\u00ader areas of the law, the gen\u00ader\u00adal rule is that what counts is the law at the time. It\u2019s only illeg\u00adal if it was illeg\u00adal at the time the offence was com\u00admit\u00adted, for example (the major excep\u00adtion being crimes against human\u00adity). Even pat\u00adents are val\u00adid for a set peri\u00adod of time, and com\u00adpan\u00adies know how long that will be when they apply for the pat\u00adent (hence all the phar\u00adma\u00adceut\u00adic\u00adal tricks with minor modi\u00adfic\u00ada\u00adtions that they hope will be just enough to get a new pat\u00adent on). Only in copy\u00adright, that I\u2019m aware of, has it been the case that the peri\u00adod of valid\u00adity has been so massively changed and applied ret\u00adro\u00adact\u00adively. From 21 years (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historyofcopyright.org\/\">His\u00adtory of Copy\u00adright<\/a> to the death of the author plus 50\u201375 years, depend\u00ading on the coun\u00adtry you live in and some con\u00advo\u00adluted depend\u00aden\u00adcies. And then there\u2019s the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copyright#How_long_copyright_lasts\">fam\u00adous exten\u00adsion<\/a> by which Mickey Mouse would have been in the pub\u00adlic domain by now, but won\u2019t be for a while&nbsp;yet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It just seems odd to me, the fact that copy\u00adright is the excep\u00adtion to the gen\u00ader\u00adal rule.
