I real\u00adise that one of the beau\u00adties of the Eng\u00adlish lan\u00adguage is the way new words and phrases are coined, and I will defend the right of people to do so, but it does\u00adn\u2019t mean I need to <em>like<\/em> all of them. Like the cur\u00adrent use of <em>gift<\/em> as a verb. To me it seemed obvi\u00adous that you should always use <em>give<\/em> instead, until I real\u00adised that the mean\u00ading is actu\u00adally <q>to give as a gift<\/q>. Which isn\u2019t as tau\u00adto\u00adlog\u00adous as it sounds, since the verb \u201cgive\u201d has many mean\u00adings, only some of which have to do with the giv\u00ading of&nbsp;gifts.<\/p>\n<p>It seems to be mainly used in one of two contexts:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To give as a gift some\u00adthing that the giver made (or could have made), such as knit\u00adted or baked items. <q>Per\u00adfect for bak\u00ading and gift\u00ading<\/q>, for example.<\/li>\n<li>And the notori\u00adous <em>regift\u00ading<\/em>, the giv\u00ading of a gift to someone else that the giver was giv\u00aden. There seem to be whole treat\u00adises writ\u00adten around how to do this at this time of&nbsp;year.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I\u2019ve nev\u00ader heard <em>gift<\/em> used as a verb in spoken Eng\u00adlish, but it crops up a lot on blogs and email lists writ\u00adten by Amer\u00adic\u00adans. I\u2019m sure the usage will spread and fig\u00adur\u00ading out the subtle dif\u00adfer\u00adence in mean\u00ading to <em>give<\/em> makes it easi\u00ader to take.
