My tod\u00addler daugh\u00adter loves trucks; she\u2019ll glee\u00adfully point them out on the street and in books until you\u2019re sick of the word. So just before her birth\u00adday, there was me in the toy store look\u00ading at truck-related toys for her (trucks, trains, cars, oth\u00ader assor\u00adted toy vehicles) try\u00ading to pick out some\u00adthing that did\u00adn\u2019t entirely duplic\u00adate what she already has. Behind me, I heard a cus\u00adtom\u00ader ask the clerk for help. The con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion ran along these lines:<\/p>\n
Cus\u00adtom\u00ader: Hi, I\u2019m look\u00ading for a toy for a two-year-old.
\nClerk: boy or girl? Not that it should mat\u00adter, of course.
\nCus\u00adtom\u00ader: it\u2019s a girl.<\/p>\n
At which the cus\u00adtom\u00ader was taken over to some oth\u00ader aisle, far away from the trucks and trains and related toys, des\u00adpite the claim that \u201cit should\u00adn\u2019t mat\u00adter\u201d. I was in the toy store for a while, and she nev\u00ader did make it over to what I guess was con\u00adsidered the \u201cboy\u201d side of the store. My daugh\u00adter loved the trucks we got her, and likes hav\u00ading the truck book that her grand\u00admoth\u00ader gave her for her birth\u00adday read to her (to cries of \u201ctruck! truck!\u201d).
