There\u2019s been a lot of dis\u00adcus\u00adsion in the papers about the newly-tabled Bill on Cana\u00addian Copy\u00adright; suf\u00adfice to say there are lots of issues with it and it needs to be sent back and turned into some\u00adthing that meets the needs of the cit\u00adizens and res\u00adid\u00adents of this coun\u00adtry. If you\u2019re liv\u00ading in Canada, I\u2019d recom\u00admend you read some of Michael Geist\u2019s<\/a> blog, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly the sum\u00admary of last week<\/a>, and then email your MP<\/span> about the issues that con\u00adcern you the most. For me, it\u2019s the poten\u00adtial that play\u00ading DVDs from a region oth\u00ader than Canada could viol\u00adate the law. If I\u2019ve bought the DVDs leg\u00adally, or had them giv\u00aden to me, why should play\u00ading them viol\u00adate the law? Why should get\u00adting a cell phone unlocked viol\u00adate the law? Why should back\u00ading up my CDs viol\u00adate the law? This is one of the few issues I can remem\u00adber where it seems that every news\u00adpa\u00adper has the same tone to the edit\u00ador\u00adi\u00adal \u2014 and it isn\u2019t com\u00adpli\u00adment\u00adary to the government.<\/p>\n

Mind you, my loc\u00adal MP<\/span> isn\u2019t exactly known for listen\u00ading to his con\u00adstitu\u00adents (there\u2019s still a lot of loc\u00adal anger at his cross\u00ading the floor after being elec\u00adted<\/a>), so who knows how much good my email (a heav\u00adily edited ver\u00adsion of the one at that used to be found at http:\/\/www.copyrightforcanadians.ca\/action\/firstlook) will do.<\/p>\n
