{"id":39,"date":"2004-08-04T17:29:44","date_gmt":"2004-08-05T00:29:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.laurenwood.org\/anyway\/index.php\/archives\/2004\/08\/04\/tour-de-thoiry\/"},"modified":"2007-02-16T16:36:33","modified_gmt":"2007-02-17T00:36:33","slug":"tour-de-thoiry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.laurenwood.org\/anyway\/2004\/08\/tour-de-thoiry\/","title":{"rendered":"Tour de Thoiry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>En route to the <span class=\"caps\">CSW<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xmlsummerschool.com\" title=\"link to XML Summer School\"><span class=\"caps\">XML<\/span> Sum\u00admer School<\/a> I vis\u00adited friends from Mel\u00adbourne who are cur\u00adrently liv\u00ading in the French coun\u00adtryside, a little out of Geneva. As luck would have it, the Tour de France was passing through the vil\u00adlage nearest to them, so we decided to make the most of the event and go and&nbsp;watch.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This part of France is hilly, rather than moun\u00adtain\u00adous, and the weath\u00ader was grey and over\u00adcast with quite a lot of rain. We\u2019d been told the cyc\u00adlists would come through around noon, and obvi\u00adously the many people gathered on the side of the road believed it (except for the bunch who really knew what was hap\u00adpen\u00ading and showed up five minutes before the cyc\u00adlists).  It actu\u00adally was\u00adn\u2019t until after 1 pm that the cyc\u00adlists finally made it (prob\u00adably slowed down with the rain) but there was a cer\u00adtain amount of enter\u00adtain\u00adment while we waited with all the advert\u00adising cars driv\u00ading along the route throw\u00ading packs of instant cof\u00adfee and the like, some guy on hay\u00adbales up at the corner wav\u00ading a cow-bell very loudly (I told you it was the French coun\u00adtryside) and the occa\u00adsion\u00adal kiosk-in-a-van  stop\u00adping to sell the assor\u00adted mul\u00adti\u00adtude teddy bears, t\u2011shirts, and bottled water.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.laurenwood.org\/images\/200407\/tdf-kiosk.jpg\" alt=\"Tour de France van kiosk\"><\/p>\n<p>Even\u00adtu\u00adally the heli\u00adcopter star\u00adted buzz\u00ading so we knew it would\u00adn\u2019t be too much longer. Sure enough, after more advert\u00adising cars (mostly vari\u00adous spon\u00adsors and news sta\u00adtions), police cars, and motor\u00adcycles, we finally saw the first batch of 6 cyc\u00adlists, fol\u00adlowed by the oblig\u00adat\u00adory motor\u00adcycles, ambu\u00adlance, and police cars. But no yel\u00adlow jer\u00adsey amongst them; I checked the cam\u00adera to make sure my eye had\u00adn\u2019t missed it.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.laurenwood.org\/images\/200407\/tdf-cyclists-1.jpg\" alt=\"first Tour de France cyclists\"><\/p>\n<p>Some 3 minutes passed before the oth\u00ader cyc\u00adlists came through.
