I\u2019ve blogged some of the jour\u00adney, start\u00ading with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laurenwood.org\/anyway\/2009\/01\/installing-opensolaris\/\">motiv\u00ada\u00adtion<\/a> and mov\u00ading through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laurenwood.org\/anyway\/2009\/01\/to-do-list-for-opensolaris-installation\/\">todo list<\/a>. Yes\u00adter\u00adday was the day for the big switch.<\/p>\n<p>After a couple of hours twid\u00addling this and that, get\u00adting rid of spare cables, and vacu\u00adum\u00ading the backs of com\u00adputers that sel\u00addom get this treat\u00adment, we now have a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laurenwood.org\/anyway\/2008\/07\/reworking-the-network\/\">hard\u00adware firewall\/router<\/a> and some minor web sites powered by a Sun Ultra 20 <a href=\"http:\/\/opensolaris.org\/\">OpenSol\u00adar\u00adis<\/a>, rather than rely\u00ading on an old Pen\u00adti\u00adum 3 doing all of that. For some reas\u00adon the Sol\u00adar\u00adis box did\u00adn\u2019t start the Eth\u00ader\u00adnet con\u00adnec\u00adtion prop\u00aderly on reboot, but I don\u2019t yet know wheth\u00ader that was a ran\u00addom occur\u00adrence or some\u00adthing that I have to pay atten\u00adtion to. Still, things are work\u00ading, at least until our next power out\u00adage. Wheth\u00ader it works past that depends on wheth\u00ader the router moves around the <span class=\"caps\">IP<\/span> addresses it assigns, which would mean the IP-based for\u00adward\u00ading not for\u00adward\u00ading to the right place. I may end up installing <em>dd wrt<\/em> or some\u00adthing sim\u00adil\u00adar on the fire\u00adwall (although it appears the par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar one I have does\u00adn\u2019t sup\u00adport <em>dd wrt<\/em> itself), but for the time being I\u2019m run\u00adning the ori\u00adgin\u00adal soft\u00adware and it seems to do the&nbsp;job.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the things I\u2019ve wanted to do for a while was move the firewall\/router and minor web sites served from an old Pen\u00adti\u00adum 3 in the base\u00adment to a more mod\u00adern solu\u00adtion.
