I\u2019m slowly recov\u00ader\u00ading from the whirl\u00adwind that was North\u00adern Voice<\/a> this year (I\u2019m one of the organ\u00adisers). All our hard work paid off, we had the usu\u00adal last-minute glitches but every\u00adone seemed to enjoy them\u00adselves, to make new friends and con\u00adtacts, to learn new things, to dis\u00adcuss issues they care about, and to have fun. <\/p>\n

On Fri\u00adday I spent most of my time on the regis\u00adtra\u00adtion desk, apart from intro\u00addu\u00adcing the con\u00adfer\u00adence and listen\u00ading to Stew\u00adart But\u00adter\u00adfield\u2019s key\u00adnote. Sat\u00adurday was a little dif\u00adfer\u00adent; I made it to lots of ses\u00adsions (both key\u00adnotes, Aid\u00adrie\u2019s pan\u00adel, my own pan\u00adel, bits and pieces of oth\u00ader talks\/panels). What I took away from all was a sense of com\u00admunity, a sense that the people attend\u00ading are truly inter\u00adested in shar\u00ading their know\u00adledge and exper\u00adi\u00adences, in being genu\u00adine. Even though some blog from a purely per\u00adson\u00adal stand\u00adpoint, and oth\u00aders from a pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal, there was dis\u00adcus\u00adsion about how to be genu\u00adine, how to show who you are with\u00adin whatever lim\u00adits you find reas\u00adon\u00adable (some people blog about their chil\u00addren, oth\u00aders don\u2019t, for example). I\u2019m look\u00ading for\u00adward to watch\u00ading the videos of the ses\u00adsions I did\u00adn\u2019t man\u00adage to make it to; we only had three ses\u00adsions con\u00adcur\u00adrently but lots of good top\u00adics. The energy in the whole space was amazing. <\/p>\n

Sat\u00adurday night after we got home, we found Van\u00adcouver was in the top ten for two trend\u00ading Twit\u00adter top\u00adics: North\u00adern Voice and the Canucks. As someone tweeted (sorry, can\u00ad\u2019t find it now), that really shows that Van\u00adcouver people under\u00adstand how to use these tools for com\u00admu\u00adnic\u00ada\u00adtion. I feel proud, as one of the organ\u00adisers of North\u00adern Voice, to do my little bit to help, by giv\u00ading people who care about these things an oppor\u00adtun\u00adity to get togeth\u00ader and dis\u00adcuss them. And it\u2019s fun \u2014 at a Ser\u00adi\u00adous Con\u00adfer\u00adence we could nev\u00ader get away with put\u00adting out a bas\u00adket of yarn and telling people to make their own lan\u00adyards (yes, we had some of those white elast\u00adic things for those uncom\u00adfort\u00adable with the notion). Lots of people grav\u00adit\u00adated to the bright fluffy stuff, or used mul\u00adtiple strands, cre\u00adat\u00ading their own bit of wear\u00adable art. And then there was the Moose col\u00adlec\u00adtion \u2014 Rahel Bail\u00adlie donated her col\u00adlec\u00adtion of moose as a fund-raiser for the con\u00adfer\u00adence, so we had these moose statues and ties and kitsch spread over one corner of the regis\u00adtra\u00adtion desk. Again, not some\u00adthing you can do at a Ser\u00adi\u00adous Con\u00adfer\u00adence. Which does\u00adn\u2019t mean to say we did\u00adn\u2019t talk about ser\u00adi\u00adous top\u00adics, there were lots of those, and lots of dis\u00adcus\u00adsion about them. <\/p>\n
