I tend to find myself at smal\u00adler con\u00adfer\u00adences where you have a chance to see people again whom you saw in the last talk, and can ask a ques\u00adtion of a speak\u00ader in a quieter moment than the imme\u00addi\u00adate post-talk rush.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Which is a way of remind\u00ading those inter\u00adested in the finer details of markup tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies (<span class=\"caps\">XML<\/span>, <span class=\"caps\">SGML<\/span>, and oth\u00ader related tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies), that sub\u00admis\u00adsions for one of my favour\u00adite small con\u00adfer\u00adences, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.balisage.net\">Bal\u00adis\u00adage<\/a>, are due in a little over a month (April 24th, to be pre\u00adcise). I\u2019ve signed up to be a peer review\u00ader, though I haven\u2019t been act\u00adive enough in markup research and tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies recently to sub\u00admit a paper myself.<\/p>\n<p>If you are writ\u00ading a paper, I have some requests to make my life as a peer review\u00ader easi\u00ader (and make it more likely that I recom\u00admend your talk be accep\u00adted). Please explain what it\u2019s all about clearly, defin\u00ading terms that may not be famil\u00adi\u00adar to every\u00adone, and above all, explain why it\u2019s inter\u00adest\u00ading! Too many papers I\u2019ve seen assume that out\u00adsiders will magic\u00adally under\u00adstand what\u2019s valu\u00adable; usu\u00adally a poor assump\u00adtion. Spell-check the whole paper, and get someone else to proof it look\u00ading for gram\u00admat\u00adic\u00adal errors, sen\u00adtences that ramble on for too long, and phrases that make no sense. The tone should be pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal but not bor\u00ading, as I will be mak\u00ading assump\u00adtions as to wheth\u00ader you can give a good talk based on the paper you sub\u00admit (it\u2019s a blind review, so I won\u2019t know who you are when I review your paper). And do fol\u00adlow the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.balisage.net\/submissions.html\">guidelines<\/a>; they\u2019re there for good reasons.<\/p>\n<p>And the most import\u00adant thing, fail\u00adure to observe which res\u00adul\u00adted in my recom\u00admend\u00ading talks not be accep\u00adted last year des\u00adpite poten\u00adtially inter\u00adest\u00ading top\u00adics: make sure the paper is long enough!
