I admit to find\u00ading it amus\u00ading that Barack Obama\u2019s gift to Gor\u00addon Brown of 25 clas\u00adsic Amer\u00adic\u00adan movies ended up illus\u00adtrat\u00ading one of my hot but\u00adtons \u2014 Mr. Brown could\u00adn\u2019t watch the Region 1\u2011encoded DVDs on his Region 2 play\u00ader. I have been in many dis\u00adcus\u00adsions with wet-behind-the-ears idi\u00adots in con\u00adsumer elec\u00adtron\u00adics stores who par\u00adrot the Hol\u00adly\u00adwood line that region-encod\u00ading is just fine and reas\u00adon\u00adable. Ask\u00ading them why send\u00ading DVDs from the US<\/span> to Europe is bad and should be stopped meets with a \u201chuh?\u201d answer. Ask\u00ading them why my tod\u00addler should not be able to watch DVDs sent to us from friends in Aus\u00adtralia eli\u00adcits more of the same. <\/p>\n

Even\u00adtu\u00adally we bought a DVD<\/span> play\u00ader that plays from oth\u00ader regions as well, mak\u00ading it pos\u00adsible for me to buy Ger\u00adman-lan\u00adguage DVDs suit\u00adable for my chil\u00addren (not easy to find in Region 1 encod\u00ading). To my mind, the fact that the regions were set up to put Mex\u00adico in with Aus\u00adtralia and New Zea\u00adl\u00adand<\/a> shows how non\u00adsensic\u00adal the whole concept is. I really don\u2019t under\u00adstand why so many DVD<\/span> man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders auto\u00admat\u00adic\u00adally region-encoded the DVDs rather than mak\u00ading them region-free, and I\u2019m pleased to see that even though Blu-Ray repeats the whole region idiocy, many man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders are in fact mak\u00ading their Blu-Ray discs region-free<\/a>. <\/p>\n

I assume at least part of that response is due to the wide avail\u00adab\u00adil\u00adity of DVD<\/span> play\u00aders that don\u2019t worry about regions, and the avail\u00adab\u00adil\u00adity of instruc\u00adtions to mod oth\u00ader DVD<\/span> play\u00aders. There\u2019s an inter\u00adest\u00ading write-up of the law case against Sony in Aus\u00adtralia<\/a> as well, which points out that \u201cretail\u00aders of DVD<\/span> play\u00aders are not bound by the terms of the CSS<\/span> licence and the accom\u00adpa\u00adny\u00ading tech\u00adnic\u00adal specifications\u201d. <\/p>\n

This whole thing is one of the reas\u00adons I was so con\u00adcerned<\/a> about the copy\u00adright legis\u00adla\u00adtion Canada\u2019s Con\u00adser\u00advat\u00adive gov\u00adern\u00adment was try\u00ading to have passed last year. It cur\u00adrently seems to be stalled, so I can show my kids their Ger\u00adman-lan\u00adguage DVDs, and DVDs from Aus\u00adtralia, with a clear con\u00adscience a while longer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
