I chair the <span class=\"caps\">OASIS<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oasis-open.org\/committees\/tc_home.php?wg_abbrev=entity\">Entity Res\u00adol\u00adu\u00adtion <span class=\"caps\">TC<\/span><\/a>, which is work\u00ading on <span class=\"caps\">XML<\/span> Catalogs.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of cata\u00adlogs has been around for a long time, it was one of the first pieces of work to come out of <span class=\"caps\">SGML<\/span> Open, the pre\u00adcurs\u00ador to <span class=\"caps\">OASIS<\/span>. We\u2019ve updated them for <span class=\"caps\">XML<\/span> and use on the Web and although we spend a lot of time explain\u00ading that entity res\u00adol\u00adu\u00adtion is not restric\u00adted to <span class=\"caps\">XML<\/span> enti\u00adtit\u00adies and indeed we use the word \u201centity\u201d in the more gen\u00ader\u00adal sense of the word, i.e. we really mean \u201cresource\u201d in today\u2019s ter\u00admin\u00ado\u00adlogy (see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oasis-open.org\/committees\/entity\/faq.php\"><span class=\"caps\">FAQ<\/span><\/a> for more on this), I think it\u2019s a good <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oasis-open.org\/committees\/download.php\/14041\/xml-catalogs.html\">piece of work<\/a>. Mind you, hav\u00ading <a href=\"http:\/\/norman.walsh.name\/2005\/09\/02\/xmlCatalogs\">Norm<\/a> edit it and write code to imple\u00adment it does help immensely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So now it\u2019s time to vote! We need anoth\u00ader 44 <span class=\"caps\">OASIS<\/span> mem\u00adber com\u00adpan\u00adies to vote (we need to reach a total of 47 \u201cYes\u201d votes to pass) \u2014 so please pass this on to any vot\u00ading reps you know (yes, this is a shame\u00adless lob\u00adby\u00ading act for some\u00adthing I think is worth\u00adwhile). Many thanks!<\/p>\n<p>Some sup\u00adport\u00ading inform\u00ada\u00adtion from the&nbsp;<span class=\"caps\">TC<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caps\">XML<\/span> doc\u00adu\u00adments and data often ref\u00ader\u00adence oth\u00ader extern\u00adal resources.  Often the ref\u00ader\u00aden\u00adcing inform\u00ada\u00adtion is not suf\u00adfi\u00adcient to loc\u00adate the desired resource unam\u00adbigu\u00adously, or the resource is not access\u00adible at the giv\u00aden loc\u00ada\u00adtion at the time it is required, or it is prefer\u00adable that an altern\u00adate resource be used in place of the ref\u00ader\u00adenced resource.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Extern\u00adal iden\u00adti\u00adfi\u00aders may require resources that are not always avail\u00adable. For example, a sys\u00adtem iden\u00adti\u00adfi\u00ader that points to a resource on anoth\u00ader machine may be inac\u00adcess\u00adible if a net\u00adwork con\u00adnec\u00adtion is not available.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li> Extern\u00adal iden\u00adti\u00adfi\u00aders may require pro\u00adto\u00adcols that are not access\u00adible to all of the tools on a single com\u00adputer sys\u00adtem. An extern\u00adal iden\u00adti\u00adfi\u00ader that is addressed with the <span class=\"caps\">FTP<\/span> pro\u00adtocol, for example, is not access\u00adible to a tool that does not sup\u00adport that protocol.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li> It is often con\u00adveni\u00adent to access resources using sys\u00adtem iden\u00adti\u00adfi\u00aders that point to loc\u00adal resources. Exchan\u00adging doc\u00adu\u00adments that refer to loc\u00adal resources with oth\u00ader sys\u00adtems is prob\u00adlem\u00adat\u00adic at best and impossible at&nbsp;worst.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Incom\u00ading <span class=\"caps\">XML<\/span> doc\u00adu\u00adments may ref\u00ader\u00adence cus\u00adtom\u00adized ver\u00adsions of stand\u00adard <span class=\"caps\">XML<\/span> schem\u00adas.  To pro\u00adtect your sys\u00adtems, it is neces\u00adsary to remap the schema ref\u00ader\u00adences so that known, trus\u00adted cop\u00adies of the schem\u00adas are&nbsp;used.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Entity Res\u00adol\u00adu\u00adtion is the pro\u00adcess by which these resource ref\u00ader\u00adences can be mapped to anoth\u00ader ver\u00adsion of the ref\u00ader\u00adence that can be found or that is pre\u00adferred for oth\u00ader reas\u00adons.  To address these issues, the <span class=\"caps\">OASIS<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">XML<\/span> Cata\u00adlog spe\u00adcific\u00ada\u00adtion defines an applic\u00ada\u00adtion-inde\u00adpend\u00adent entity cata\u00adlog that maps extern\u00adal iden\u00adti\u00adfi\u00aders and <span class=\"caps\">URI<\/span> ref\u00ader\u00adences to (oth\u00ader) <span class=\"caps\">URI<\/span> references.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Entity res\u00adol\u00adu\u00adtion cata\u00adlogs have already been widely imple\u00admen\u00adted in much deployed soft\u00adware.
